Connect WhatsApp to Claude Code
Claude Code talks to remote MCP servers over HTTP directly, so connecting SheetWA is a single terminal command. After that, Claude Code can look up contacts, check a broadcast's delivery or draft replies while you work.
It is a good fit for scripted jobs, such as tagging every contact from a CSV or reporting on last week's broadcasts, because you can watch each tool call as it runs.
Before you start#
- A SheetWA workspace with a WhatsApp number connected through the WhatsApp API.
- An API Growth or API Max plan, or the 7-day free trial.
- An MCP key from the workspace owner or an admin, made under MCP Server in the dashboard.
New to keys? See how to create one.
Add SheetWA to Claude Code#
- 1Run this once in your terminal.
- 2Start Claude Code and type /mcp to check SheetWA shows as connected.
bashTerminal
claude mcp add --transport http sheetwa https://backend.sheetwa.com/api/v3/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer sk_live_your_key_here"Replace sk_live_your_key_here with your key. The server URL is https://backend.sheetwa.com/api/v3/mcp.
Check it works#
- 1Start Claude Code and type /mcp. SheetWA should be listed as connected, with its tools.
- 2Ask: "Is my WhatsApp number connected?" Claude Code should call waca_connection_status.
- 3To use SheetWA in every project, add the server with --scope user.
Things to try#
- "Show my unread WhatsApp chats and summarise them."
- "Find contacts tagged VIP who have not messaged in 30 days."
- "Which of my templates are approved, and what placeholders do they need?"
- "How did yesterday's broadcast do? List the failed numbers."
Claude Code picks the right tools on its own. See the tools.
If something goes wrong#
- /mcp shows SheetWA as failed
- Run claude mcp remove sheetwa, then add it again and check the key is pasted in full.
- The key ended up in a shared repo
- Remove the key in SheetWA under MCP Server and give a new one. The old key stops working on its next request.
- Every call answers PLAN_LIMIT_REACHED
- MCP is included in API Growth and API Max. A workspace on API Lite needs to upgrade first.
