What a credit card payment message must include

A cardholder should know what to pay, by when, and what happens if they pay less, before they open the app.

  • The cardholder's name
  • The bank or card issuer name
  • The masked card number, last four digits only
  • Total amount due and minimum amount due
  • The payment due date
  • The interest rate or late fee, stated as an amount, where it applies
  • Ways to pay: the bank app, net banking, UPI or an official link
  • A helpline, and a line for those who have already paid

Mask the card to its last four digits and never ask for the CVV, OTP or PIN. Under RBI rules a late fee applies only after 3 days past due.

Common mistakes in credit card payment reminders

  • Showing only the total due, so a cardholder who cannot pay in full does not know the minimum.
  • Not saying that paying only the minimum still costs interest, which leads to angry calls next month.
  • Sending the full card number or asking the customer to confirm a CVV, which trains them to fall for scams.
  • Charging or warning of a late fee the day after the due date, which goes against RBI's three-day rule.

Send credit card payment messages from a Google Sheet with SheetWA

  1. 1

Put one cardholder per row in a Google Sheet, with a column named after every placeholder: name, last four digits, total due, minimum due, due date.

  2. 2

Open SheetWA, paste the template, and each placeholder fills from the sheet column with the same name. Every cardholder sees their own amounts and dates.

  3. 3

Attach the statement PDF if you like, preview a few rows, and send. Filter the sheet by due date to send the 5-day, due-day and overdue messages to the right people.

Frequently asked questions

What is a credit card payment message?

It is a note from a bank or card issuer about a card bill: that the statement is ready, that a payment is due, that a payment was received, or that it is overdue. It shows the masked card number, the total due, the minimum due and the due date, with a way to pay.

When should a bank send a credit card payment reminder?

Send the statement message on the day it is generated, a reminder about 5 days before the due date, and a short one on the due date itself. If the payment is missed, send a factual overdue message with the late fee, keeping in mind RBI's three-day window before the fee applies.

What happens if I pay only the minimum amount due?

Your card stays in good standing and no late fee applies, but you lose the interest-free period. Interest is charged on the unpaid balance, often at 3% to 4% a month, and usually on new purchases too until the full balance is cleared. Paying the total due is always cheaper.

When is a credit card late fee charged in India?

Under RBI's credit card rules, a card issuer can charge a late payment fee only when the payment has stayed unpaid for more than three days after the due date. The fee is usually a slab based on the amount due, plus GST, and is listed in the card's key fact statement.

How do I know a credit card message from my bank is genuine?

A genuine message shows only the last four digits of your card, comes from your bank's official sender name, and links only to the bank's own website or app. It never asks for your CVV, OTP, PIN or full card number. When unsure, open your bank app directly instead of tapping the link.

Can I pay a credit card bill through UPI?

Yes. Most UPI apps let you pay any bank's credit card bill through Bharat BillPay, and many banks accept UPI on their own payment page. Payments usually post within hours, but near the due date pay a day early and keep the reference number until it shows on your card account.

What should an autopay failed message say?

Say which card it was for, the date the autopay failed, the reason if you know it, and the exact amount to pay now. Give an official payment link and a link to update the autopay account. A clear failure message turns a missed payment into a same-day fix.

Can I send credit card payment reminders on WhatsApp in bulk?

Yes. Keep cardholders in a Google Sheet with their due amounts and dates, paste a template into SheetWA, and send one personalised reminder per row, with the statement PDF attached. For bank-scale volumes, use the SheetWA WhatsApp API with approved utility templates.
